In 2003, I carried a plastic Holga camera with me for about 8 months during my travels. What began as a simple diversion became a sort of therapy and exercise in seeing. Because of the limitations of the camera, I was unable to precisely control composition and exposure. The camera leaked light causing color shifts and quite unexpected results. Photography with this camera became more about the act of making a picture rather then the picture it self, and I experimented with making only one picture of any given situation. Instinct and reflex were the only guiding principles in making the pictures. The result was pictures that were not “about” anything at all but were still, in their way, “true”. Thus the title, Nonfiction.

Established in 2011, Mobile Photo Group is an international collective of mobile photographers dedicated to promoting their work and presenting mobile photography as an important and evolving form of photography.

We are documentarists, street photographers, fashion photographers, portrait photographers, photojournalists, story tellers, writers, poets and artists. But first and foremost, we are photographers.

Mobile Photo Group (MPG) was founded by photographers who set out to capture compelling images, only their mobile devices — it’s 12 founding members include: Misho Baranovic, Chun Tong Chung, Jim Darling, Sion Fullana, Benedicte Guillon, Dominique Jost, Anton Kawasaki, Oliver Lang, Morgan Miranda, Jordi V. Pou, Star Rush, and Greg Schmigel.

With a unified vision and a dedicated passion, MPG photographers capture their views on the world and share their stories — as seen through their mobile devices — documenting the people, the events, the landscapes, the issues and the photojournalistic opportunities they encounter.

Sleepers
Most of us don’t get enough sleep. “As the world is getting faster and crazier, I’ve noticed sleepers around the streets, just everywhere,” writes photographer Romain Philippon. “Of course, I also see some poetry and dreamings in all of that, but the contrast is so interesting to me, people trying to escape to their condition…” Philippon is self-publishing a book on the topic called “Inconscience”. The first eight photographs in this entry are from that book. Collected here as well are more photographs of people everywhere lucky enough to find a few winks.
